The Shapes of Water

The Shapes of Water unfolds as a musical journey, following water from rain and luminous reflections toward the seductive voices of sirens and the depths of the sea. Through the sequence of works and the echoes between them, Winston Choi shapes a larger narrative of attraction, turbulence, and transformation, in which water becomes a vessel for memory and imagination.

Composers: Maurice Ravel, Mischa Zupko, Tōru Takemitsu, György Ligeti, Claude Debussy, Tristan Murail, Karol Szymanowski, Amy Beach, Mel Bonis, Abel Decaux, Gabriel Dupont, Lei Liang, Luciano Berio, Brian Current, and Leopold Godowsky.

Playing with Time

Performing alongside his recorded self on a Yamaha Disklavier or Steinway Spirio, Winston Choi explores the encounter between a performance preserved in time and the living, responsive musician who returns to it, opening new possibilities for counterpoint, dialogue, and musical memory. The program brings selected fugues from Bach’s The Art of Fugue and an adaptation of Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin into conversation with new works for live pianist and playback by Carl Schimmel, Matt Mason, and Bradley Robin; Choi’s arrangements of works by Jeffrey Mumford and Kyong Mee Choi; and his own Deconstrapunctus, Résonances bloquées, and arrangement of Hallelujah.
